Sicilian Ancient Town Miths in San Mauro Castelverde

Calandra ( or Calàtta ) is an ancient town on the mountain to the southeast , just outside the town , that was actually the ancient San Mauro then destroyed and replaced with a different site from today's centre. It is said that it had existed since the time of Cicero (first century BC ) and that he had given the world such illustrious sons , a certain Demetrius and Cecilio. Calatta probably was, along with Alyosha (the current town of Tusa ), a colony of Herbita (modern Nicosia ).

Churches and Buildings in San Mauro Castelverde

Wonderfully sited, 1,050 meters above sea level, the town is dotted with several interesting secular and religious Sicilian property. The 18th Century Chiesa Madre with its 15th century bell tower houses a 16th century marble altarpiece and fragments of a medieval polyptych of the Madonna and Child.
The Medieval Chiesa (church) di Santa Maria dei Franchi has a 16th century baptismal font by Antonello Gagini. The former Town Hall houses an anthropological museum a perfect place to learn some of Sicily's history and facts.

National Gorges of Tiberius Park in Sicily

The Gorges of Tiberius since 2001 is one of the European Geoparks Network sites recognized by UNESCO for its geological values. The site consists of a river-karst gorge carved by the river Pollina and Mesozoic carbonate rocks where it is possible to find fossils.
The gorges go down along the river for about 250 meters long.

It was formed in the Upper Triassic, about 200 million years ago. You can see a large presence of natural shapes of the landscape as it is a mineralogical site. You can find this European GeoPark gem in between the town of San Mauro and Pollina (province of Palermo) and 30 mins drive from Cefalu.

The UNESCO site is accessible by two local great tours: La Rocca andAssociazione Madonie outdoor. Both services have local operators with detailed knowledge of the territory.

Also they provide on site services for food, drinks, and a lot of fun. And why not find a great rocky spot to sit down, relax, and enjoy the sounds of nature.
